How to avoid rental scams while looking for a student room
Do not pay for a student room you have not stood in. A urgent chat, a neat photo, and a QR code are not proof that the bed exists or that the sender can rent it.
This is general guidance. It is not a list of reported crimes in Dehradun, and RoomWroom does not investigate messages that never came through the product.
Signs to pause
- You are told the bed will vanish tonight if you do not transfer now.
- The address is a landmark only, or the pin does not match the photos.
- The person will not meet, or will only meet after the deposit.
- The rent is far below every other offer and the details are thin.
- Payment goes to a personal account with a different name from the person you are talking to, and nobody can explain why.
- The same photos show up with a different college name.
None of these proves a scam on its own. Together they are a reason to stop. A genuine owner can wait until you visit.
What to do instead
- Ask for the full address and visit in daylight, with a friend if you can.
- Match the room to the photos while you are there.
- Ask who owns or manages the place, and whether they live there.
- Pay only after that visit, against a receipt that names the address.
- Keep the chat, but do not treat the chat as the agreement.
The longer checklist is 15 things to check before renting a PG in Dehradun.
What RoomWroom does not do
A future listing can show rent, sharing, distance, and a check date. That is not the same as a guarantee, a background check, or a promise the bed is still free. Exploring rooms is Coming soon. If someone claims RoomWroom has “verified” a place and this site does not show a check date, do not take their word for it.
If something already went wrong, write to the operator inbox. That email is not a police report and not a refund desk.
