PG vs independent room: which is better for college?
Neither is better in the abstract. An independent room is one door and one bed. A shared PG is a place with more than one student. A bed is the smallest piece of a shared room. Choose by the life you can actually keep, not by the label in a chat.
The comparison below is general guidance for college students in India. It is not a statement about a vacancy near Graphic Era, and RoomWroom is not ranking properties.
The three labels
| Label | What you get | What to ask next |
|---|---|---|
| Independent room | One door and one bed for you. | Is the kitchen, bathroom, or entrance still shared? |
| Shared PG | A place with two or more beds, often with house rules and sometimes food. | How many people, and is food actually included? |
| Just a bed | Your bed in a room you share. | Who chooses the roommate, and can that change? |
What usually changes
Quiet and control. Your own room is easier when you study late or keep odd hours. A shared room is easier when you want people around and a lower rent. Neither outcome is guaranteed by the word “PG”.
Rules. Many PGs set visitor hours, kitchen hours, and sometimes a gate time. An independent room can still sit inside a house with rules. Ask for them in writing before you treat the place as private.
Money. A bed often looks cheaper on the rent line and more expensive once food, laundry, and electricity are added. An independent room can look expensive and still include less. List every monthly line. Plan the month, not just the rent shows the lines without inventing Dehradun prices.
Leaving. Shared places sometimes fill your bed the week you go home. Ask about notice, about who keeps a key, and about the deposit. RoomWroom does not hold that deposit.
A way to decide
- Write the non-negotiables: lock on the door, food, gender of the flat, distance to Graphic Era.
- Drop any offer that will not name the sharing.
- Visit the remaining ones. Photos are not the room.
